The reason for that in my case was actually the dialogue before the fight that triggers after you talk to Sebastian and other captured spawn. It's the dialogue where Astarion goes "those poor victims, shame I'll have to use them for the ritual tho" - at which point you have to stop him right there and convince him it's a bad thing to do.

with Astarion as a thief fighter, and because I haven't used him at all this game, so I don't really have any gear for him. Anything he would have used, my bard is already using. This monk/rogue build seems very effective in combat already, which is great!

Sep 15, 2023 · I would take Astarion to level 4 in Thief rather than L3 for the early feat. Going Thief 4, Monk 8 gets you feats at levels 4, 8, 12, instead of at levels 7, 11. The benefits you get from getting to L9 as a monk instead of 8 are advanced movement and deft strikes.

There's a particular scene in Act I Blighted Village where Astarion joyfully steps forward to interrupt an event in the barn at the north end of the village. As of patch 6, he no longer steps forward, and it's a somewhat significant ding to approval (+5).

Astarion as a bard is great. It fits his personality well. Swords bard is probably the strongest archer in the game, and bards get expertise at level 3 so he can still be a very OP lock picker, trap disabler etc. You don't need to make him the party face if he's a bard.

Astarion doesn't hide the fact that he is an asshole and that he is using you, and you can use him too. In fact there's a dialog where if you tell him "don't worry I'll protect you" he thinks you are condescending and a dumbass.

Aug 5, 2023 · I'd want Astarion to be a more physical presence on the field rather than shooting from the darkness and 9th level Rogue can still dual wield. Taking 3 in Bard for the Silence, Lesser Restoration, and See Invisibility are very useful while mirror image or blur scrolls are pretty cheap for the handful of fights that Astarion might need them.
