More than just a building, the Library of Birmingham (LoB) designed by Mecanoo is a People’s Palace, a centre for learning, information and culture that unites people of all ages and backgrounds. This modernist clean-edged library designed by Mecanoo architects, imposes its presence by contrast with surrounding buildings. Its clean forms of basic geometry, quasi-transparent facades made remarkable by repetition of circular frames and its extension into the public space are design features quite particular.

Library of Birmingham Centenary Square, the largest public square in the heart of Birmingham, currently lacks cohesion or a clear identity or atmosphere. Mecanoo’s design transforms the square into one with three distinct realms: monumental, cultural and entertainment.
