Sixty state and federal agencies were working Monday to try to contain an onshore wash of medical waste, including hundreds of hypodermic needles and feminine hygiene products, over the weekend along the coastline from Delaware to Virginia,

Rehoboth Beach is the latest popular vacation spot added to the long list on Monday, joining Dewey Beach, Fenwick Island, Ocean City, Assateague Island National Park, Chincoteague and more in telling swimmers to stay out of the water and warning visitors to wear closed-toe shoes on the beach.

Rehoboth Beach announced its closure to swimmers on Monday, joining Dewey Beach and Fenwick Island after medical waste began washing ashore Sunday, though a news release from the city said the closure is "primarily due to rough surf conditions."

Many beaches in Delaware have been closed to swimming since Sunday, September 15th when medical waste began washing up on the beaches. DNREC's swimming/wading advisory is through Sept, 23. Wearing closed-toe shoes to walk on the beach is advised.

Fenwick Island has released new information regarding beach conditions and medical waste that has been washing ashore on along the eastern shore. At this time no medical waste was found during the last few days of inspection.

Some beaches in Ocean City, Maryland, have been shut down after medical waste – including syringes and pill bottles – washed ashore.

Multiple stretches of beaches along the coast of Delaware, Maryland and Virginia are closed until further notice due to needles and other medical waste washing ashore, officials said.
