Mahmoud Khalil, a Palestinian activist who helped lead Columbia University's student encampment protests, has been arrested by ICE.

Greer said she spoke by phone with one of the ICE agents during the arrest, who said they were acting on State Department orders to revoke Khalil’s student visa. Informed by the attorney that Khalil was in the United States as a permanent resident with a green card, the agent said they were revoking that too, according to the lawyer.

Khalil said his situation is "oddly reminiscent of when I fled the brutality of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in Syria" in an op-ed in Columbia's student newspaper.

Attorneys for the Department of Homeland Security have 24 hours to produce evidence showing why Mahmoud Khalil should be deported ahead of a Friday hearing.

A Louisiana judge is giving the government until Wednesday evening to turn over any evidence it has to justify the deportation of Mahmoud Khalil, a spokesperson for the Columbia University graduate’s legal team said.

Khalil’s March arrest was the first in a growing number of attempted deportations against foreign-born students who expressed criticism of Israel.

A Louisiana immigration judge said if the evidence doesn’t support Khalil’s deportation, she would “terminate the case on Friday.”
