A council has confirmed that non-compliant emergency vehicles will not be charged for entering a city's clean air zone (CAZ). Drivers of some emergency vehicles were facing charges of £9 a day when entering the zone in Bath, Somerset, ahead of a four-year exemption period coming to an end on 14 March.

A plan to charge fire engines to drive into Bath’s Clean Air Zone (CAZ) has been postponed. Since the CAZ was introduced in 2021, emergency service vehicles and those used by voluntary groups in support of them have been exempt from paying the charge. But that exemption was only for four years and is set to end on March 14.

Bath and North East Somerset Council introduced a so-called Clean Air Zone (CAZ) – another name for an LTN – in 2021. It granted a four-year suspension on charges to emergency responders and support vehicles to allow them time to “update” their fleet.
