The National Weather Service said on Jan. 3, 2018, parts of north Florida, along with south Georgia, saw snow accumulate thanks to the first winter storm the Sunshine State had seen since 1989. Georgia of course saw the largest accumulations, up to 2 inches, but the snowfall in Florida was still measurable.

Florida saw the most snowfall in its history Tuesday, as a rare and deadly winter storm walloped the Gulf Coast and Southeast. The heaviest snow occurred around Pensacola, where 9 inches had fallen. That’s more than double the Sunshine State’s previous record.

The counties on the First Coast that recorded the highest snowfall totals between Tuesday morning and Wednesday morning are Ware, Glynn and Nassau.

Lights and more importantly heat was on in Northeast Florida homes as the biggest impact of a winter storm was further north in Georgia.

From Pensacola to Jacksonville, snowfall was reported ranging from inches-deep to a light dusting. A whopping 9.8 inches was recorded in Milton, Fla. a city about 23 miles northeast of Pensacola. In nearby Molino, 9.5 inches of snow was recorded.

Pensacola isn’t out of the thick of it just yet. The National Weather Service extended its extreme cold warning for Northwest Florida from 9 p.m. Wednesday to 9 a.m. Thursday. Wednesday and Thursday are expected to be dry, which means we probably won’t see any new snow while temperatures continue to dip below freezing.
