MELBOURNE — Everything came so easily for Iga Swiatek during a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Emma Raducanu Saturday in the only Australian Open women’s third-round match between two past Grand Slam champions — if you thought that meant it would be close, you’d have been rather wrong — that this was how she described it:

Swiatek, who agreed to accept a one-month suspension in a doping case late last year, owns four trophies from the French Open and one from the U.S. Open. She's never been beyond the semifinals in Australia; she lost in that round to Danielle Collins in 2022. A year ago, Swiatek was upset in the third round by teenager Linda Noskova.

Monfils joined Roger Federer as the only men to achieve this age-defying feat, before Svitolina eliminated No. 4 seed Jasmine Paolini later in the day.

Gael Monfils has often been blamed for not taking full advantage of his talent during his career. Indeed, the French veteran could have achieved more prestigious results although he played in the same era as legends such as Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer.

Monfils upset fourth-seeded Taylor Fritz of the United States 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (1), 6-4 in the third round at Melbourne, Australia. When Monfils made his Australian Open debut in 2005, Fritz, now 27 years old, was 7.

American Learner Tien kept the teenage revolution going at the Australian Open by reaching the fourth round on Saturday after 38-year-old Gael Monfils had made a big statement for the old guard with a stunning win over fourth seed Taylor Fritz.

There is no doubt that the Frenchman has also been helped by the fact that he has found the right serenity off the court. Gael has created a beautiful family with his colleague Elina Svitolina, and the two champions support each other at all times.

Two friends from California, Learner Tien and Alex Michelsen, have both reached the fourth round at the Australian Open.
