An American Airlines flight arriving at Ronald Reagan National Airport was forced to abort its landing to avoid another aircraft Tuesday, officials said, less than a month after a midair collision killed 67 people near the same airport and roughly 90 minutes before a close call between a passenger plane and a private jet in Chicago.

The Federal Aviation Administration says an American Airlines plane arriving at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport discontinued its landing, performing a go-around to avoid getting too close to another aircraft departing from the same runway.

American Airlines Flight 2246 was requested by air traffic control to delay landing at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) in Arlington “to allow another aircraft more time to take off” at around 8:20 a.

The incident happened less than two hours before a similar event in Chicago amid a spate of aviation disasters in North America.

American Airlines isn’t giving up on O’Hare International Airport. The Fort Worth, Texas-based carrier says it will operate 22% more flights with 25% more seats from O’Hare this summer than last year. It will have 480 peak daily departures, the most since 2019, when the airline had 540 flights.
