India’s ruling Hindu nationalist party has named a woman as the top government official in the state of New Delhi, which includes the country’s capital

Shalimar Bagh BJP MLA Rekha Gupta, who clinched victory in Shalimar Bagh by a margin of 29,595 votes, is the next Delhi Chief Minister.

Dubai: The BJP has named Rekha Gupta, a first-time MLA from Shalimar Bagh, to lead the government. The decision was taken at a meeting of the party’s legislature party on Wednesday evening. Gupta succeeds Aam Aadmi Party’s Atishi after the BJP ended the 10-year-rule of Arvind Kejriwal’s party in the recently concluded assembly election.

BJP leader Rekha Gupta became the fourth chief minister of Delhi after BJP's Sushma Swaraj, Congress' Sheila Dikshit and AAP's Atishi. The first-time MLA was elected to the Delhi legislative assembly from the Shalimar Bagh constituency.

The decision was made at a meeting of all newly-elected BJP MLAs at the party headquarters in New Delhi on Wednesday evening.
