South Africa appears to be at a crossroads in its waxing and waning relationship with the US following President Donald Trump's controversial decision last week to cut financial aid to the country.Trump said South Africa was pursuing what he called "unjust and immoral practices" against the white minority Afrikaner community and by filing a genocide case against Israel in the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in December 2023.

Trump’s order focuses on a South African law, the Expropriation Act of 2024, which passed last month and allows the South African government to seize ethnic Afrikaners’ farm land without compensation when it is not being used, or when it would be in the public interest.

The president ordered that all foreign assistance to South Africa be halted and said his administration would prioritize the resettling of white, “Afrikaner refugees” into the United States.
