Tu’s baby has a name! The young Asian elephant calf, born at the Oregon Zoo on Feb. 1, will henceforth be known as Tula-Tu, a name chosen by care staff to reflect both her individual character and significance to the herd.

Zoo staff had been on baby watch since Jan. 29, when Rose-Tu’s progesterone levels dropped to near zero, indicating labor should begin soon. The father is 25-year-old male elephant Samson.
