The Birmingham metro area contains the majority of Alabama’s curviest roads and has had the most fatal car accidents over the last year. But there may not be a connection, officials say.

Flames and smoke could be seen from the interstate when a vacant business caught fire in eastern Birmingham Thursday morning.

The Center Point Fire District, along with Birmingham Fire and RAMS air medical helicopter, responded to the crash around 7:30 a.m. on Highway 79 near Jeff State Parkway.
