Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, dropped some LGBTQ protections from its hate speech rules Tuesday amid a wider overhaul of the social media giant’s content moderation

Meta will allow its billions of social media users to accuse people of being mentally ill based on their sexuality or gender identity.

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and Threads, has revised its hate speech guidelines to allow users to describe LGBTQ people as mentally ill. The change was announced in new guidelines released Tuesday by the media outfit.

The Defense Department agreed to a class-action settlement that may affect more than 35,000 LGBTQ veterans who were discharged because of their sexual orientation under “don’t ask, don’t tell” and similar earlier policies.

The U.S. Department of Defense has agreed to overhaul its process for LGBTQ veterans to seek honorable discharges after they were barred from serving because of their sexual orientation, according to a filing in San Francisco federal court on Monday.

The Pentagon said it will restore the discharge records of 35,000 veterans to “honorable,” ending a class action suit filed more than a year ago by veterans outed under the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policies.

Meta’s Instagram has been blocking LGBTQ-related hashtags for months, according to reporting by User Mag. This was done under the company’s “sensitive content” policy as an attempt to restrict “sexually suggestive content.
